Shoreline erosion is a natural process, but severe erosion can cause a variety of problems. Streambanks and shorelines can undercut or weaken infrastructure and add sediment to the waterway resulting in sediment pollution. Increased levels of sediment can clog streams and drainage paths, change the waterbody’s shape, negatively impact fisheries, promote algae growth, and restrict recreation activities. Severe shoreline erosion causes noticeable changes over a short period of time. Signs include high shoreline banks over steep areas of soil, leaning trees with exposed roots, unusually muddy streams, and large deposits of sand and sediments in shallow areas of the stream. Visit respectourwaters.org to learn more about shoreline erosion. |
