Fallen Leaves
Fallen leaves can lead to nutrient pollution in local waterways and flooding if left in the street. Leaves may be swept up by stormwater runoff and flow into local waterways, where they then decompose and release excess nutrients. Excessive amounts of phosphorus deposited into stormwater runoff can lead to algal blooms, increased macrophyte growth, and reduced dissolved oxygen levels. All of which degrade the water quality of aquatic ecosystems. Consider mulching or composting your leaves this fall to protect the health of our waterways and prevent flooding on your street. Leaves release nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen as they decay which provides your lawn or garden with a natural fertilizer. Help keep our waterways clean and healthy this fall by mulching or composting your leaves. Learn more at respectourwaters.org/leaf-management
