Tip of The Month
Construction projects can disrupt and move large amounts of sediment. When loose, this sediment is more likely to be carried away from construction sites via stormwater runoff and snow melt. Once this sediment enters water bodies it can deposit harmful chemicals, increase water turbidity, and lower the overall quality of the waterway. Lower water quality may make bodies of water unsuitable for aquatic life and recreation activities. Whether you are completing an at-home construction project, have hired a contractor, or work in the construction industry, you can help prevent sediment pollution. Implement pollution-prevention measures such as vegetated buffers, rain gardens, and stormwater infiltration basins to minimize sediment pollution and keep our waterways healthy. Contact the Wisconsin DNR if you see any of these three signs of sediment pollution and visit respectourwaters.org for more information.
