Winter

Preparing for Winter

With winter on its way, we need to get our yards ready for the cold weather. By protecting rain gardens and barrels now, you can help reduce pollutants, like bacteria, from getting into our waterways in the Spring.

Rain gardens do a great job of slowing down runoff during rain events and allowing rainwater to infiltrate into the ground. As rainwater infiltrates, soil filters out nutrients and harmful bacteria that we don’t want entering our waterways. To protect your rain garden this winter make sure to mulch. This will aid the native plants during harsh weather conditions by providing a protective layer.

Our rain barrels also need maintenance this winter. Make sure to empty the remaining water and disconnect from your gutters to prevent the barrel from expanding and cracking. Rain barrels divert 600 gallons of water that would be produced from 1in of rain on a 1000-square foot roof. The rainwater collected can prevent a sizeable amount of stormwater from becoming a flooded home or picking up pollutants, like bacteria. To protect our waters, remember to prepare your yard for winter this year!
