MONTHLY STORMWATER EDUCATION

Drains

Have you ever seen a storm drain or pipe leading to a waterway that has unusual odor, suds, an oil sheen, or flowing water when there is no rain or snow melting-you may have found an illicit discharge.

Common examples of illicit discharges include sanitary wastewater, effluent from septic tanks, spills from roadway accidents, and improper disposal of auto and household hazardous wastes. Remember, if it's not rain it doesn’t belong in the drain.

Please contact your local municipality if you think you have identified an illicit discharge or call the DNR spill hotline 1-800-943-0003. To learn more visit, www.respectourwaters.org/illicit-discharge.
