Winter Considerations for Snow and Ice Treatments

Before you bring out your big bag of rock salt, consider using some water-safe alternatives to help the health of the Milwaukee River and minimize the water quality impact it has on our streams, rivers, and lakes.

4 Alternatives for De-icing:
• Sugar beet juice - safe for water, pets, plants, grass, etc!
• Sand
• Cat Litter - provides traction
• Remove snow early in morning and after each fall
AND please remember to take care of your storm drains until the first snowfall by removing any leaf debris to prevent it from freezing!

Lecture Series: Return of the Lake Sturgeon Project
Presentation by: Mary Holleback, Naturalist and Citizen Science Manager, Riveredge Nature Center
Tuesday, Feb. 15th - 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Riveredge Nature Center Visitor Center
Lake sturgeons are the oldest and largest native fish found in the Great Lakes ecosystem. For a variety of reasons they were extirpated from the Milwaukee River over 100 years ago. In an attempt to help return this ancient fish to its ancestral waters, the Wisconsin DNR and Riveredge Nature Center have been raising lake sturgeon at Riveredge in a streamside rearing facility. The goal is to raise 1,000 to 1,500 fish every year for 25 years which will provide enough mature adults to support a breeding population of lake sturgeons in Lake Michigan. The on-site project coordinator, Mary Holleback, will discuss the biology and ecology of this large fish as well as the lessons learned along the way and how the public can support this unique and exciting restoration project.

Lecture Series: Stream Restoration with Trout Unlimited
Presentation by: Myk Hranicka, Volunteer with Trout Unlimited
Tuesday, March 1st -  6:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Riveredge Nature Center Visitor Center
Come join local Trout Unlimited volunteer, Myk Hranicka, as he shares what the Local Trout Unlimited Chapter has been doing recently and in the past 20+ years to restore local trout streams. He will also discuss how dam removal can supercharge efforts to clean our waterways and cool our rivers down.
